SU Fall Flushing Program
Stoughton Utilities will be conducting its regular program of fall flushing of water mains and fire hydrants from September 1 through October 1, 2010. The Stoughton Water Utility cleans and flushes its water mains annually. Flushing operations will be conducted at varying times, Monday through Friday, beginning each morning at 8:00 a.m. and finishing by 3:30 p.m. in order to minimize any possible inconvenience to our customers. Flushing is done by the opening of fire hydrants. The purpose of flushing is to remove sediment and mineral deposits that settle on the bottom of the water mains. Stoughton Utilities flushes the 55 miles of water mains twice a year. The first flushing is done in the spring, starting in April and the second is done in the fall, starting in September. Discolored water could be drawn into homes or businesses if water is used while area water mains are being flushed, or immediately following the flushing operation. The discolored water results from dislodged minerals that have become encrusted on the walls of the water main. This mineralized water is not harmful to drink, but could cause laundry stains. If temporary water discoloration occurs, it can be cleared by opening the cold, hard water taps nearest the water meter to full flow for a short period of time after flushing crews have left the area. If you have concerns or special needs that would be affected by water main flushing, please
contact us
for a schedule or to discuss your situation. Schedules are approximate and can be affected by weather, crew size, and/or mechanical breakdowns, so changes may occur.
