Apprentice Lineman

Stoughton Utilities, a department of the City of Stoughton, an Equal Opportunity Employer, is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as an Apprentice Lineman. The purpose of this position is to assist in performing electrical distribution line construction, maintenance, and repair tasks for the City of Stoughton. This position is intended to provide training leading to journeyman lineman status.

This position’s tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Assists in operating diggers, bucket trucks, hand tools near and around electrical distribution lines
  • Assists in operating live-line tools to connect and disconnect distribution lines and components.
  • Assists in installing primary and secondary overhead and underground electrical systems.
  • Assists in operating and maintaining the electric SCADA system.
  • Prepares work sites. Erects warning signs and secures areas.
  • Trims trees and removes and chips brush.
  • Repairs and maintains street lights.
  • Operates loaders, backhoes, dump trucks, jack hammers, wood chipper, chain saws, cutting torch and welders.
This position will function under the Utilities Electric System Supervisor.

Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and preference will be given to a candidate who possesses one or more of the following:
  • Enrollment in a Wisconsin four-year line technician apprenticeship
  • Vocational/technical training in electrical systems
  • Two to three years electrical system maintenance experience
  • Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities leading to journeyman lineman status.
Also required are competent verbal and written communication skills, ability to multi-task and work without direct supervision, and basic computer skills and abilities.

A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required at hire. Certification in CPR, first aid, Hilti gun, forklift certification, and commercial driver's license with tanker and airbrake certification also preferred or will be required to be obtained after hire.

Journeyman Lineman

Stoughton Utilities, a department of the City of Stoughton, an Equal Opportunity Employer, is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Journeyman Lineman. The purpose of this position is to perform electrical distribution line construction, maintenance, and repair tasks for the City of Stoughton Utilities.

This position installs primary and secondary overhead and underground electrical systems; operates digger derricks, bucket trucks, and hand tools near and around electrical distribution lines; and operates live-line tools to connect and disconnect distribution lines and components. The position will also operate and maintain the electric SCADA system to obtain system data and perform substation maintenance operations.

Candidates must possess:
  • High school diploma or equivalent, and a Journeyman Lineman certification.
  • A valid driver's license, with the ability to obtain a commercial driver's license with tanker and airbrake certifications within two months of hire.
  • Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification.
Also required are competent verbal and written communication skills, ability to multi-task and work without direct supervision, and basic computer skills and abilities.

This is a full-time, non-represented, non-exempt position, reporting to the Utilities Operations Superintendent. A competitive wage and benefits package is offered. Stoughton Utilities provides service to more than 8,800 electric, 4,900 water, and 4,900 wastewater customers. Electric utility operating revenues were $15.1M in 2016, with a 32 MW peak demand.

Stoughton Utilities has received national recognition from the American Public Power Association (APPA) for achieving exceptional electric reliability, earning "RP3" recognition for providing consumers with the highest degree of reliable and safe electric service. Stoughton Utilities received the designation in 2006, 2008, 2010, 2013, and 2016.

Stoughton Utilities has a strong safety culture, and has earned the APPA’s Safety Award of Excellence for safe operating practices, receiving the first place award in the category for utilities with 15,986.75 worker-hours of annual worker exposure. The utility also received a Gold Safety Award from Municipal Electric Utilities of Wisconsin (MEUW) for the past ten consecutive years for safe working practices. An onsite safety coordinator is retained by the utility to maintain a high level of employee safety.

For the past 16 years, Stoughton Utilities' tree planting and management program has earned the "Tree Line USA Utility" designation from the Arbor Day Foundation. The utility also participates in APPA's TREE POWER program, having planted one tree per customer, and has received APPA's Golden Tree Award.
